Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar
Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Myanmar, has been held under de facto house arrest since May 30, 2003 when she was taken into “protective custody” following violent clashes between opposition and government supporters at a political rally. The ruling junta reported that four people had been killed in the incident but eyewitnesses placed the true figure at more than 60, with many others injured. On 27 May 2008 Suu Kyi’s latest house arrest warrant was extended for another year. Previously, Suu Kyi was held under similar conditions at her home in the capital, Yangon, but released as part of UN-brokered talks between the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) and the NLD which began in October 2000. Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October 1991. She is the author of many books, including Freedom from Fear, Letters from Burma and The Voice of Hope.
