PEN Canada for Freedom of Expression

Readers & Writers

Readers & Writers is a PEN Canada program of readings, discussions and literary events that invites students, teachers and the general public to listen, to imagine the world as described by writers and to learn about everyone’s right to freedom of expression.

Established Canadian writers share the stage with writers who have found asylum in Canada, and with local writers in a wide range of communities. We visit high school classes, we read in libraries, universities, museums and writers’ festivals.

In this way, we come to a fuller appreciation of the many and diverse voices of Canada’s writers and learn about our rights as citizens.

I want you all to know that your visit was apparently one of the best in the Human Rights course. I received more reflections from the students saying that your presentation had a life changing impact on them than on any other visit. ... a few students hope to have a student PEN group. Thank you for being so inspiring - Marika Ince, Burlington high school teacher
